In October 1980 I left Coventry for Teesside but kept in contact with friends by letter. Johnny Adams was one of them. I&#8217;d met Johnny in 1972 at the Lanch Poly. John formed <\/span><b style=\"font-family: arial\">Fission<\/b><span style=\"font-family: arial\"> in 1973, a progressive rock outfit and in the summer of 1974 they played for the Hobo Workshop at the Holyhead Youth Centre, Coventry. At the time Charley Anderson and Desmond Brown and Neol Davies were practicing&nbsp;down in the basement of the Holyhead, this was long before the formation of <\/span><b style=\"font-family: arial\">Selecter<\/b><span style=\"font-family: arial\">, and Fission, back then, were close to a deal with Island Records. Sadly Fission split up instead! A few bands later, Johnny joined the Coventry punk band <\/span><b style=\"font-family: arial\">Squad<\/b><span style=\"font-family: arial\"> after Terry Hall left to join the <\/span><b style=\"font-family: arial\">Specials<\/b><span style=\"font-family: arial\">. Fast forward to October 1980, both the original Selecter and Squad split up and Johnny Adams wrote to me. I&#8217;d mentioned I&#8217;d seen an Asian band playing Ska at the General Wolfe just before I left Coventry &#8211; not sure who they were but Johnny replied on October 1980..&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: arial\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><b style=\"font-family: arial\">&#8220;<i>Squad<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-family: arial\"> have split up but I&#8217;m forming a new band with <\/span><b style=\"font-family: arial\">Paul Heskett<\/b><span style=\"font-family: arial\"> on Sax (Ex <\/span><b style=\"font-family: arial\">Swinging Cats<\/b><span style=\"font-family: arial\"> and session musician with the Specials) &#8211; <\/span><b style=\"font-family: arial\">Charley Anderson<\/b><span style=\"font-family: arial\"> (ex <\/span><b style=\"font-family: arial\">Selecter<\/b><span style=\"font-family: arial\">) &#8211; <\/span><b style=\"font-family: arial\">Desmond Brown<\/b><span style=\"font-family: arial\"> (also Ex- <\/span><b style=\"font-family: arial\">Selecter<\/b><\/i><span style=\"font-family: arial\"><i>) and an Asian lady on Vocals (No name given<\/i>)&#8221; Of Course Johnny was also on Guitar.&#8221;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: arial\">In a second letter some time after he wrote&#8230;<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial\">&#8220;<i>I&#8217;d like to start this note firstly to tell you the <b>Panjari Jamok<\/b>, punk and reggae band fell through, not surprisingly with all the different ideas and cultures, it didn&#8217;t work.<\/i>&#8220;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: arial\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: arial\">Charley Anderson and Desmond Brown would go on to form <b>The People <\/b>in 1981. But this project was obviously a stepping stone from Selecter to The People. I&#8217;m at the crossroads as they say. I&#8217;m beginning&nbsp;to get involved with this music&nbsp;called Rock a Billie.
