<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial\">The bassist joined Coventry band The<br \/>\nEstablishment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%;margin-bottom: 10.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: arial\">&nbsp;<\/span><b style=\"font-family: arial\">Jeff Lynne<\/b><span style=\"font-family: arial\"><br \/>\nalso played in the band from early 1965 until the split when he and Williams<br \/>\njoined Coventry band The Mad Classix.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%;margin-bottom: 10.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: arial\">&nbsp;<\/span><b style=\"font-family: arial\">From Pete<br \/>\nChambers &#8211; Backbeat &#8211; Coventry Telegraph<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%;margin-bottom: 10.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: arial\">&#8221; The<br \/>\nChads were actually a Birmingham band, but they were to spend so much time<br \/>\nplaying in Coventry that the locals took them\u2019 as a Coventry band.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%;margin-bottom: 10.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: arial\">Formed in<br \/>\nthe late 1950s as the Sundowners they were one of the first bands in<br \/>\nBirmingham, beginning a fine tradition that would later include Brummie<br \/>\ntrailblazers like Mike Sheridan and the Nightriders, The Fortunes, Carl Wayne<br \/>\nand The Vikings and The Moody Blues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%;margin-bottom: 10.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: arial\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial\">After<br \/>\nnumerous personnel changes the boys hooked up with an artist managed by Reg<br \/>\nCalvert going under&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial\">the name of<br \/>\nRobby Hood. They became his merry men and were forced to dress the part<br \/>\nincluding green tights!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%;margin-bottom: 10.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: arial\">After six<br \/>\nmonths, and one disastrous gig, they parted company with Robby Hood and<br \/>\nreinvented themselves as the Chads. Coventry agent Vince Martin (Holliday)<br \/>\nbegan work on their behalf and secured them a tour of American Air Force bases<br \/>\nin France<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%;margin-bottom: 10.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: arial\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial\">They took a<br \/>\nfemale singer with them who couldn\u2019t actually sing (in the hope she would get<br \/>\nbetter. She didn&#8217;t) and to make matters worse they ended up making their<br \/>\ntemporary home in a sleazy hotel full of prostitutes and drunken GIs. Despite<br \/>\nthe conditions they lasted six weeks and eventually came back to the UK in<br \/>\n1964.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%;margin-bottom: 10.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: arial\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial\">On their<br \/>\nreturn a certain Jeff Lynne joined the band, this was early 65, and he stayed<br \/>\nfor a while until he joined The Nightriders that became Idle Race, before going<br \/>\non to The Move, ELO and the mega-stardom Of The Travelling Wilbury\u2019s.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%;margin-bottom: 10.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: arial\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial\">&#8220;Jeff<br \/>\nLynne was also a member of Coventry band The Mad Classix in a stint that lasted<br \/>\njust three weeks. It ended when the Mad Classix had their van stolen and all<br \/>\ntheir gear was inside it!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%;margin-bottom: 10.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: arial\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial\">The Chads<br \/>\nagent Vince Martin (Holliday) was himself a member of one of Coventry\u2019s first<br \/>\nrock n roll bands, The Vampires.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%;margin-bottom: 10.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: arial\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial\">More than<br \/>\n30 years later, the Chads are still mates and get together occasionally to<br \/>\nrecord some old blues numbers.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%;margin-bottom: 10.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: arial\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial\">As this was<br \/>\na Birmingham band with strong Coventry connections the reader is referred to<br \/>\nBrum Beat site for fuller information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 115%;margin-bottom: 10.0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: arial\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial\">&#8221; The<br \/>\nChads had an agent named Vince Martin from Coventry who found some supposedly<br \/>\nlucrative bookings for the group in France at U.S. Army and Air Force bases.<br \/>\nThere was a catch though. The group would have to hire a female lead singer as<br \/>\nwas a condition for the gigs so after a number of auditions, Pauline Shepherd<br \/>\nwas selected for the role. Thus in September of 1964, The Chads departed on the<br \/>\nferry to France for their &#8220;big adventure&#8221; on the Continent.
