{"id":14,"date":"2013-05-18T21:50:00","date_gmt":"2013-05-18T20:50:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2023-11-13T04:45:12","modified_gmt":"2023-11-13T04:45:12","slug":"the-hobkirk-papers-stokesley-1750","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsrainbow.com\/georgemarkhamtweddell\/2013\/05\/18\/the-hobkirk-papers-stokesley-1750\/","title":{"rendered":"The Hobkirk Papers &#8211; Stokesley 1750"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: center\">\n<b><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: large\">The Hobkirk Papers (Stories) &#8211; Stokesley 1750<\/span><\/b><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\">\n<b><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: large\"><br \/><\/span><\/b><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\"><b>Isaac Hobkirk<\/b> was an innkeeper in Stokesley in 1750 and the <i>Half Moon Inn <\/i>features often in his stories.<b>Daphne Franks<\/b>, author of &nbsp;<i>Printing and Publishing in Stokesley 1984,<\/i> that it &#8216;<i>was probably his house &#8211; One of the lost inns of Stokesley which has been located as Winscombe House, no 54, High Street.&#8221;<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<i><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\"><br \/><\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">Hobkirk&#8217;s stories originally appeared in <i>Tweddell&#8217;s Yorkshire Miscellany<\/i> in the 1840&#8217;s (gathered I think from oral sources).<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\"><b>Daphne Franks<\/b> continues &#8211;&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">&#8220;The Stokesley of the stories is described for us in a letter of <b>William Mason<\/b> of Middlesbrough.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">&#8220;When the markets were great&nbsp;gatherings&nbsp;of the rural folk and the farmers&#8217; wives rode pillion and butchers shambles were filled with meat.
