\nUp these old steps, how many a Thief has trod<\/span><\/div>\n
\nWhose faltering feet ne\u2019er press\u2019d the worst of men,<\/span><\/div>\n
\n\u2019T is bad use to put the worst of men,<\/span><\/div>\n
\nSending them unprepared to meet their God.<\/span><\/div>\n
\nBut he well knows what circumstances make 5<\/span><\/div>\n
\nThe pliant youthful heart to Vice inclined;<\/span><\/div>\n
\nKnows how well rightly has been train\u2019d the mind,<\/span><\/div>\n
\nGoodness is the result. He ne\u2019er will take<\/span><\/div>\n
\nVengeance that we may suffer for the sake<\/span><\/div>\n
\nOf satisfying Vengeance. They who here 10<\/span><\/div>\n
\nDragg\u2019d Thieves to suffer death, without one tear<\/span><\/div>\n
\nFor those who at the uprising axe did quake<\/span><\/div>\n
\nWith horror, acted mercifully well,<\/span><\/div>\n
\nCompared with those who preach an everlasting Hell.<\/span><\/div>\n

\nThey who in Hardwick Forest ever stole 15<\/span><\/div>\n
\nOne shilling and an eight value, then<\/span><\/div>\n
\nNeed seek no mercy from their fellow-men,<\/span><\/div>\n
\nWho quickly did upon the Culprits fall<\/span><\/div>\n
\nAnd, after short respite, did hither haul<\/span><\/div>\n
\nThe trembling Thieves to meet their direful doom. 20<\/span><\/div>\n
\nBright gleam\u2019d the falling axe, and soon the tomb<\/span><\/div>\n
\nCover\u2019d each mutilated corpse. Would that all<\/span><\/div>\n
\nWho help to form the characters of those<\/span><\/div>\n
\nChildren, our future People soon to be,<\/span><\/div>\n
\nAnd who must aid or mar prosperity 25<\/span><\/div>\n
\nIn our lov\u2019d land\u2014obey\u2019d the unchanging laws<\/span><\/div>\n

\nFor Scottish \u201cMaiden,\u201d and for \u201cGuillotine\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
\nOf our French neighbours, each the idea took 30<\/span><\/div>\n
\nFrom Halifax\u2019s \u201cGibbet:\u201d but I look<\/span><\/div>\n
\nForward with faith, and wiser men, I ween,<\/span><\/div>\n
\nWill never sacrifice one human life,<\/span><\/div>\n
\nSave in sheer self-defence. Our prisons can<\/span><\/div>\n
\nHold in safe keeping the poor brutal man 35<\/span><\/div>\n
\nWhose liberty to others may be rife<\/span><\/div>\n
\nWith danger. Even as a mere machine,<\/span><\/div>\n
\nAn able-bodied man I\u2019d not destroy:<\/span><\/div>\n
\nThink what it costs to rear a single boy<\/span><\/div>\n
\nFrom infancy to manhood! Let this scene 40<\/span><\/div>\n
\nOf bygone bloodshed, now so peaceful, be<\/span><\/div>\n
\nAn emblem of advanced humanity.<\/span><\/div>\n
\nIV<\/span><\/div>\n
\nHow marvellously Halifax has grown<\/span><\/div>\n
\nIn manufactures, commerce, liberty!<\/span><\/div>\n
\nAnd when true education is made free 45<\/span><\/div>\n
\nTo every child, and Knowledge broadcast sown,<\/span><\/div>\n
\nCrime with its parent Ignorance will flee,<\/span><\/div>\n
\nAnd Capital and Labour so combine<\/span><\/div>\n
\nAs to make Earth an Eden more divine,<\/span><\/div>\n
\nAnd man will be industrious as the bee, 50<\/span><\/div>\n
\nKnowing that none will of the honey rob<\/span><\/div>\n
\nThose who produce it. Think not, foolish man,<\/span><\/div>\n
\nThat we in civilisation never can<\/span><\/div>\n
\nSurpass the Past. I tell thee that the Mob<\/span><\/div>\n
\nWill yet arrive at Manhood, and that there 55<\/span><\/div>\n
\nWill yet be happiness which all will share.<\/span><\/div>\n
