Thank you.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: arial\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><b><span style=\",sans-serif\">John Wesley<br \/>\nHackworth\u2019s Passport<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\",sans-serif\">On the 12th<br \/>\nDecember 1836, John was granted a Russian passport for the homeward journey, by<br \/>\nthe Tsar himself. The name on the passport read John William Hackworth,<br \/>\nbecause, as George Turner Smith remarks \u201c<i>his name was considered unsuitable<br \/>\nfor a visitor to Mother Russia.\u201d<\/i> Timothy Hackworth was a Methodist and<br \/>\nnamed his son after, John Wesley<br \/>\nbut for the passport they changed Wesley to William so as not offend the<br \/>\nRussian Orthodox church. The passport was kept by John Wesley Hackworth\u2019s<br \/>\ndescendants until 2005 when Joan Hackworth Weir donated it to the Hackworth<br \/>\nArchives at NRM, York.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\",sans-serif\"><b>The passport reads<\/b> &#8211;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\",sans-serif\">\u201c<i>By Edict of his Majesty, the Sovereign Emperor. Nikolai Pavlovitch,<br \/>\nAutocrat of all the Russias. To each and every person who it may concern, it is<br \/>\nhereby announced that the presenter of this document, a citizen of Great<br \/>\nBritain, John William Hackworth, mechanical engineer, is leaving this country<br \/>\nvia Lierandia and Kurlendia. In witness whereof and for freedom of passage he is<br \/>\ngiven this passport, which remains valid for three weeks, to pass the bearer<br \/>\nthrough the frontier. This passport is allocated by The St. Petersburg District<br \/>\nGovernor General with the affixed seal of His Imperial Majesty at St.<br \/>\nPetersburg 12th day of December in the year 1836.
