{"id":16,"date":"2014-05-25T16:50:00","date_gmt":"2014-05-25T15:50:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2023-11-13T04:58:20","modified_gmt":"2023-11-13T04:58:20","slug":"works-manager-soho-works-shildon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsrainbow.com\/johnwesleyhackworth\/2014\/05\/25\/works-manager-soho-works-shildon\/","title":{"rendered":"Works Manager &#8211; Soho Works, Shildon."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name=\"_Hlk53405375\"><\/a><a name=\"_Hlk53405473\"><span><b><span style=\",sans-serif\">Return<br \/>\nto England<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\",sans-serif\"><b>George Turner<br \/>\nSmith<\/b> gives an account in his book Thomas Hackworth, of what was happening at Shildon, after his return in<br \/>\n1837.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\",sans-serif\"><span>George believes that a second<br \/>\nlocomotive had been built to go to Russia.<span>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>It was similar to <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsrainbow.com\/johnwesleyhackworth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2014\/05\/IMG-0315s.jpg\" style=\"clear: right;float: right;margin-bottom: 1em;margin-left: 1em\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1052\" data-original-width=\"2048\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsrainbow.com\/johnwesleyhackworth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2014\/05\/IMG-0315s-300x154.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>the Russian locomotive named \u2018Arrow\u2019.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>It was purchased by the S&amp;DR Company, but<br \/>\nit had teething problems and Thomas Hackworth, who was the Manager at Soho<br \/>\nWorks, was blamed.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>The Directors of the<br \/>\nS&amp;DR made things so difficult for Thomas that he decided in 1839 to leave.<br \/>\nHe set up his own business of Hackworth &amp; Fossick at Norton near Stockton<br \/>\nand continued to build locomotives \u2013 the very first order came from the Directors<br \/>\nof the S&amp;DR!<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif\">He also engine steam<br \/>\nships, six of which took part in the American Civil war. Things were never<br \/>\nquite so good again for Timothy Hackworth.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif\">George Smith<\/span><b style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif\"> <\/b><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif\">says that John Wesley Hackworth continued to work for<br \/>\nthe family firm at Shildon, alongside <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif\">younger<\/span><b style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif\"> <\/b><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif\">brother, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif\">another Timothy<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif\">However,<br \/>\nthings were not always cosy, \u201c<\/span><i style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif\">During the years 1840 \u2013 1850, with Timothy<br \/>\nHackworth at the helm, Soho Works struggled to survive. Timothy operated on the<br \/>\nmargins of profitability\u2026the situation at the <\/i><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><i style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsrainbow.com\/johnwesleyhackworth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2014\/05\/download.jpg\" style=\"clear: right;float: right;margin-bottom: 1em;margin-left: 1em\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"282\" data-original-width=\"179\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsrainbow.com\/johnwesleyhackworth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2014\/05\/download.jpg\" title=\"Thomas Hackworth (The younger)\" \/><\/a><\/i><\/div>\n<p><i style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif\"><br \/>Soho Works deteriorated further when Timothy died in 1850.\u201d <\/i><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif\">John<br \/>\nhad taken care of routine operations of the work<\/span><i style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif\">. \u201cAfter Timothy\u2019s death,<br \/>\nthere was a bitter dispute between John and young Timothy<b> <\/b>over<br \/>\nwhether to close the loss-making Soho works, or battle on and try and bring the<br \/>\ncompany back into profit.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif\">&nbsp;Thomas set up business with George Fossick. Their company, Fossick &amp;<br \/>\nHackworth in Stockton built locomotives and carriages. (<i>Photo of Thomas Hackworth<\/i>)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\",sans-serif\">When John<br \/>\nreturned to England, love was on his mind too. He proposed to a young woman by<br \/>\nthe name of Jane Dunton from Newburn, near Newcastle, who turned him down in<br \/>\n1838. John eventually married Ann Turner, but the rejection affected him<br \/>\ndeeply. Luckily, there were no duels involved, his embracement of Russian<br \/>\nculture stopped short at the long Russian beard! (According to the 1851 census,<br \/>\nJohn was living at Shildon, aged 30, an engineer with his wife Ann and their<br \/>\nthree daughters, Joseph Salkeld (age 20) an apprentice, and a servant!&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\",sans-serif\">After Timothy<br \/>\nHackworth\u2019s death, John moved to Darlington and started making stationary<br \/>\nengines and machinery at his premises John W.
