Blest Patriarch of England\u2019s minstrelsy!
\nEnduring honours unto thee belong;
\nAnd all our bards must homage pay to thee,
\nAs father of their strains. In darkest days 5
\nOf Albion\u2019s ignorance, thou didst sing the lays
\nThat will not die until the \u2018crack of doom\u2019
\nFor thou hadst love for Nature and the true,
\nAnd well the worth of honest Wycliff knew,
\nAnd how priests\u2019 traffick\u2019d for the basest ends 10
\nPity it is that, ere thou found the tomb
\nA shelter from all harms, thy truth should be
\nThe cause of bondage and of poverty
\nTo thee, who number\u2019d Petrarch \u2018mongst thy friends.\u201d<\/p>\n
