\n(Composed whilst Smoking and Evening Pipe of some Choice Tobacco,<\/i><\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/i><\/div>\n

\nwhich he had considerately sent me, as \u201ca Christmas Present.\u201d<\/i>

\nSome, Friend and brother Bard, would call it Sin
\nFor thee to encourage Smoking: they would let
\nPoor Poets o\u2019er a thousand troubles fret,
\nAnd break the Pipes that soothe them. There is in
\nThe \u201cfragrant weed,\u201d when it is rightly used, 5
\nAn innocent pleasure, which they never knew,
\nThat to the o\u2019ertasked brain brings solace true;
\nThough, like all other bounties, oft abused.
\nAll Evil is mis-use of something Good;
\nAnd every Good Thing in excess is Bad! 10
\nThat which in moderation most will add
\nTo human happiness, poisons the blood
\nWhen over-indulged in; and the Passions we
\nAllow to master us alone bring Misery.<\/p>\n
