The GAZELLES

BAND INDEX

circa 1964-5 – Source Broadgate Gnome. R&B / Beat group

Line up: Michael O’Rourke (vocals), Graham Stansfield (lead guitar), Christopher Hollsworth (rhythm guitar), William Campbell (bass), Christopher Cooper (drums).

Managed by Fred Burden, they came second in 1964’s ‘Big Beat Contest’. They later cut some demos at Panthos Studios, turning professional in 1965. Stansfield and O’Rourke went on to The Image.

Most Local groups find it a Waste of Time to Turn Pro.
By Andy Anderson – Coventry Standard July 8th 1965
(From the article below)

The big beat boom may be over but at least one local group still looks forward to  a professional career and a possible place in the record charts.
The group is the Gazelles and they are managed by Fred Burden. The five Gazelles are bass guitarist William Campbell 17, lead guitarist Gordon Stansfield 16, rhythm guitarist Christopher Hollsworth 18, drums Christopher Cooper 18, Vocals Michael O’Rourke, an engineer.
Their manager told me that the group formed 12 months ago and were keen on turning professional and were quite willing to give up their jobs to have a go at the charts.
“We have been held up waiting for Gordon Stansfield to sit his O’level GEC’s” said Mr Burden. The Gazelles came second in last winter’s Big Beat Contest in Coventry and were then tipped for a professional career.
TOO MANY LATE NIGHTS
They have already made a test recording at Panthos Recording Studios, Balsall Common and are looking forward to a recording contract in the near future.
Mr Burden said that the group had been offered plenty of bookings but had turned some of them down. “We feel it is detrimental to the boys health to expect them to do an ordinary job in the daytime and work for the group in the evening and rarely get to bed before two o’clock in the morning” he said.
“Playing in a group is exhausting work and the Gazelles would be relieved to turn professional”
At the moment they are making only a small profit from booking as hire purchase payments on their £1,800 equipment and travelling expenses leave little in the way of spare cash.

Simon O’Grady – bass & vocals. Peter Burke – drums
Memories from John O’Sullivan- From Rex Brough
“In 1989 20 DAYS, while still playing as a trio, were invited to be ‘the band’ for a new project started by Steve Dullaghan (who joined the Primitives) and Martyn Bates (former singer with Reluctant Stereotypes & Eyeless in Gaza) which became the HUNGRY i – The HUNGRY i released 2 records, ‘Falling Orchard’ & ‘Second Step’, both 4 track EPs (on vinyl & CD) on Nursery Records. A debut album was recorded at Cabin (with Paul again, as usual), but the band split before it could be released. While the band were together, Martyn Bates continued to pursue his solo career, and I joined him as guitarist for his tours of Europe.”

Bio
After gigging around Coventry for a couple of years from 1979, giving support slots to a nascent Napalm
Death and providing Stan Campbell with his first gig (before he went on to sing ‘Free Nelson Mandela’ for Special AKA), the Human Cabbages appeared on the ‘Boys and Girls Come Out To Play’ compilation 7″ and made an EP, ‘The Witch’. John Peel played the records once or twice but the odd distraction got in the way in the shape of careers, families and general relocation to disparate quarters meaning that rehearsals became kind of less frequent and the Human Cabbages just never got around to arranging another gig. .. Then, in 2005, out of the blue an email came from avid US collector, Chuck Warner in Massachusetts asking if he could put ‘The Witch’ on his ‘Messthetics 103′ Midlands DIY compilation CD. So now you can buy the Human Cabbages at Tescos (well, online at least). The track’s been played on US college radio stations as well as Stuart Maconie’s Freakzone (BBC6) so it was high time for another gig. .. There had been a spontaneous reunion at Steve Teers’ wedding in 2006 when it was noticed that there would be 5 Human Cabbages in the same room. But the singer of ‘The Witch’, Rosa Roberts, had long since disappeared, until that is, an article in the Coventry Telegraph led to Rosa calling Steve and arranging lunch. Now, with a rehearsal planned and a gig booked for 2nd August, the Human Cabbages are back on the road (well, down Steve’s local) for a charity fundraiser (for childhood leukaemia research) .. …and you can see songs from the gig in the ‘videos’ section. The night raised £1500 for charity as well as a few eyebrows at Johnny’s wig and Stan’s naked torso. Plans to play a ‘hometown tour’ of the band’s current hometowns of Newcastle, Liverpool, Bournemouth, Coventry and London are a twinkle in the collective Cabbage-eyes. (Above – Rosa Roberts)

“In 1980, they were one of 6 bands to feature on the Boys and Girls
Come Out To Play EP with The Clique, Profile, Famous Five, First Offence. The Human Cabbages track was (in Pete Chamber’s opinion) the strongest of the 6 – the ska based Get a Grip – featured powerful vocals from Caron Joyce – later of Armalite.” Pete Chambers

This track, One More Fool, was the opener for the first gig in 27 years, at the Drayton Court, West Ealing, London, on 2nd August 2008. The night raised £1500 for a childhood leukaemia research charity as well as a few eyebrows at Johnny’s wig and Stan’s naked torso. Honky Tonk Rose

Current 6 piece country covers band based in Coventry. Playing songs about drinking, heart break and trucking.

Features Rick Medlock on drums. Horace Panter of the Specials on bass. Guitarist Rob Fielden-Nicholls.

“Honky Tonk Rose always promise their audiences “three chords & the truth” but on this occasion they also served up, appropriately for the occasion, thematically appropriate songs: Honky Tonk Rose play country music they tell us, but they play from a broad palette which embraces associated genres such as country swing, cajun & r&b and range from the well known to covers of artists not even band members themselves all knew: Andy Holdcroft

Pete Chambers in Godiva Rocks recalls.

” Original punkers from the mid 70’s include Homicide – led by Bev – Coventry Queen of punk. I will never forget seeing her at Mr Georges on one Thursday punk night wearing just a string vest. If that was punk, I thought to myself, I want in! Homicide were loud, played songs like Genocide and Armageddon (featured on the Sent From Coventry compilation) and they could be found playing mostly at the Swanswell Tavern.”

HIGHWAY- MAN

HIGHWAY- MAN

HIGHWAY-MAN
c 1974 or before.

My knowledge of this band came from Brian (‘Alice’ his disco I think) from Nuneaton. He sent a letter to use at Hobo (Coventry Music and Arts Magazine) and we visited a disco in Nuneaton run by Dream Disco and the Sunshine Music Agency in 1974. We were over in Nuneaton to find out more about the music scene in Nuneaton and sell copies of Hobo. While there we met a guy called Brian who said he would send some info on Nuneaton bands. (His subsequent letter is presented here).

This is what he had to say about Highway Man
“Now a word about a Nuneaton / Bedworth based band called Highway Man who have had a major reshuffle after the vocalist left to get married. Now introducing two new faces –
In comes 18 year old Steve Williams on vocals. This is his first band, but the rest of the group have high hopes, after the first vocalist left. Don Ross – bass did the vocals but now reverts back to bass guitar, but still harmony’s with the Rhythm guitarist. The second newcomer is on drums. His name is Alan Newcombe, also making his first appearance.
Paul Bainbridge (Brame) – Lead Guitar. Mick Ison – Rhythm Guitar. Don Ross – bass guitar. Steve Williams – Vocals. Alan Newcombe – drums.
At the moment they are doing some tapes with “Alice Sound”. (From Brian (Nuneaton)

STOP PRESS – INFO FROM NUNEATON
A new band from Nuneaton – Highway Man – consisting of Steve Williams vocals, Don Ross – bass, Paul Bainbridge lead, Mick Ison Rhythm. Thanks to Brian of Nuneaton for the info. (PS Your other info came too late for this issue – sorry!).”

Don Ross – more recently – and again below.

Comments
Jim Pryal [this is good]
“Cheers Trev. Now I is really confused! Don Ross might have been the Ning bass player and not the Terry Bown of Gregorian Chant, although I was aware of the Bown brothers and the scene in Nuneaton, Ross has always been in my mind. I’m sure he was the bass player in the Ning project.” Jim Pryal | 07/30/2007
“I don’t remember a Steve Williams. Myself and Mick Ison both joined from Al Foremans Hourglass. When the singer left, I took over on lead vocals and bass. I continued as vocalist / bass player until I left the band. I’ve just put a picture on facebook of me playing in Athens with the band in 1974” Don Ross.
